Dorla Deane (Thorson) Herrin Obituary

By , October 3, 2013 8:50 AM

Dorla Deane (Thorson) HerrinDorla Deane (Thorson) Herrin, age 81 died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Kenai, Alaska on September 30, 2013.

Celebration of life will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday, October 7, 2013 at Peninsula Memorial Chapel, 5839 Kenai Spur Hwy.

Dorla was born in Bagley, Minnesota in 1932 to Millie and Ole Thorson who worked at lumberjack camps in The Big Woods. Dorla and her siblings lived at the family farm with Grandma and Grandpa Halverson, enjoying a close relationship with their cousins and Norwegian extended family. Her early life on that farm and post war era shaped her to be a resourceful, hardworking and capable woman. She enjoyed the outdoors, patiently fishing, generally catching when no one else could! She belonged to the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post #20 in Kenai.

In 1951 she married Don Childs and had a daughter, Marcia, and a son, Ronnie, who died in infancy. Her life with Don’s family took her all over the United States. After her divorce she met Delmar “Red” Herrin, a single Texan with two sons: Delmar and Link. They married in 1956, blended their families and had two more children: Joy and Kevin.
In 1966 the family vacationed in Alaska, never returning to The lower 48. They settled North of Kenai where Dorla’s early childhood now equipped her to live a rural life on raw land with privation and few amenities. By example her children learned work ethics and self-sufficiency at home while her husband worked the oil fields. During this time she wrote and received abundant letters; a gift to her children that let them stay connected to relatives they rarely or never met. Many happy evenings were spent reading aloud Alaskan books and playing cards.

In 1971 she began working at Nikiski Elementary as a hot lunch cashier and eventually retired as head custodian. She enjoyed caring for the school, the staff and loved the children. Her husband Red started an excavating business and Dorla operated a loader/backhoe and heavy equipment. Together they built subdivisions and roads in the K Beach, Kenai and Nikiski area that exist today.

Dorla was preceded in death by her husband Red, her son Ronnie and stepson Delmar who died while serving in Vietnam; grandson, Darrel Herrin as well as her parents, sister, Dawna Harris and brother, Kenneth Thorson.

She is survived by her children and their spouses Marcia and L.H. Pierce, Joy and Jamie Baldridge and Kevin Herrin all of Kenai, stepson Link Herrin and wife Kathy of Yorba Linda, CA, sisters Carol Hromidko, and Sharon Pratt, brothers Paul and Gary Neill and cousins Laverne and Duane, all of Bagley, Minnesota as well as grandchildren, Heather, Tiffney, Rocky, Sarah, Lucas, Ryan and Derek and 14 great grandchildren.

Condolences may be sent in care of Joy Baldridge – P.O. Box 3665 – Kenai, AK 99611.

New Website Updates!

By , March 17, 2011 2:03 PM

Rather than wait until I had all the new information integrated into the proper pages, which may take a while, I decided that I would just make a text update page for it.

From the Genealogy page link you can go to the text updates and see if there is anything there concerning you.

The families or people listed there are:
Josephine Lanoue, obituary
Harry L Hendrix, revised death date and link to death certificate
Elizabeth Boone (Hensley / Brummett / Dodson), complete Obituary and other information.
The Sumner / Goodwin family, name fixes
The Moser / Bitterman family, Freudental / Lutheran Church Records

I have added the obituaries of Aunt Charlene Moser, Aunt Shirley Moser and Aunt Dorla Herrin to these pages as of October 03, 2013.

I will get these items in their proper place soon, but until then you can access the information this way.

Photo Fixing

By , February 7, 2011 8:15 AM

For those of you who have old family photos that you would like to add to the site, but they are damaged (either from water, tears or tape, etc) I can repair them before uploading. Please send me a good 600dpi scan of the photos and I will get them fixed up and posted.

The scans have to be at least 600dpi to make a high enough quality scan to work with and repair. Just drop me a note if you need help with scanning or where to send the photos to.

The photos below are an example of some of my earlier work. This is Henry Dayton Ogden in 1894. Digital restoration can bring back lost details without any risk to the original photos.

Website updated

By , January 4, 2011 9:15 AM

This post is a little late in coming, but the Alaska Herrins genealogy website was updated on Feb 23, 2010. I added new information from new contacts as well as old ones.

As of this time I have some more corrections to upload in the Goodwin/Sumner line so if you are researching these names please be aware that there is some mis-information in them.

There will be some new information using the Freudental Church Family Book 1861-1880 for the Moser lines including Jakob Moser and Christina Rehorn, Philipp Moser and Catharina Elisabeth Walter, Johann Philipp Moser and Christine Christmann all courtesy of Jack Schafer.

I was also sent more information on Eliza Elizabeth Boone Dodson that will be added and I may add a few new photos.

Sadly, there will be more death dates to update. These include

Josephine (Neville/Ogden) Lanoue 2010-12-29

Owen Taylor 2010-12-01

Evelyn Anne (nee unknown) Moser 2010-12-06

Hopefully I can get it updated within the next few months as things have slowed down here a little more.

Emma (Moser) Winther book update

By , March 19, 2010 11:36 AM

I re-scanned the book  and made it a smaller file so now you can download it quickly with a moderate speed internet connection. The photos took another hit by making the files smaller, but I do have original scans of some of them if anyone is interested in a copy.

Emma (Moser) Winther Book

I have taken the liberty of scanning and posting the biographical sketch “I Am Reminded of a Story” written by my great Aunt Emma (Moser) Winther, to the Alaska Herrins website. It turned out to be a really big file (18mb) so you will need a fast connection and some spare time to download it. I hope to fix that soon, but I only have time to change a little at a time.

I am hoping no family members are offended or upset by it being posted. I enjoyed reading it and feel that Emma would like to see it shared with the family. If you disagree please email me.

Photo Links, Website

I am pretty sure I have found every mistake in the photo link generation so everybody should be correct now.

The site seems to be running well and I get new emails from previously unknown distant relatives every month. I will get the new information aggregated and added in, eventually, I am almost afraid to update the site with all the problems I have had with photos!

Hopefully the new year will bring new family connections and lots of corrections/additions to the family tree.

Spoke too soon!

By , December 9, 2009 11:29 AM

I went through the Van Valkinburgh/Moser pages today and found numerous missing or mismatched photos! I can’t figure out where this is happening. I had to delete and re-generate the files and reload to the site 3 times and go through them with a fine tooth comb each time.
At this time all the people who have photos should be correctly linked! I guess I need to go through all the others again, too. I am about to dump the ged to web program I am using! Although if it is correct now and it fails again I will have to blame the server. I have had files disappear from this site before.

No News is Good News!

I am happy to report the website is getting more hits and everything seems to be running well. I have had no complaints of broken links or crosslinked photos.
With eBay sales taking all my time pretty well through Christmas I don’t think I will be putting up the new photos or any census pages until after the first of the year.
