Update screwup

WordPress updated itself and in the process wiped out ages of posts. I have tried to reinstall from backups, but so far unsuccessful. Maybe another day. Sigh.

Dorla Deane (Thorson) Herrin has passed away

Dorla Deane (Thorson) Herrin, age 81 died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Kenai, Alaska on September 30, 2013.

Celebration of life will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday, October 7, 2013 at Peninsula Memorial Chapel, 5839 Kenai Spur Hwy.

Dorla was born in Bagley, Minnesota in 1932 to Millie and Ole Thorson who worked at lumberjack camps in The Big Woods. Dorla and her siblings lived at the family farm with Grandma and Grandpa Halverson, enjoying a close relationship with their cousins and Norwegian extended family. Her early life on that farm and post war era shaped her to be a resourceful, hardworking and capable woman. She enjoyed the outdoors, patiently fishing, generally catching when no one else could! She belonged to the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post #20 in Kenai.

In 1951 she married Don Childs and had a daughter, Marcia, and a son, Ronnie, who died in infancy. Her life with Don’s family took her all over the United States. After her divorce she met Delmar “Red” Herrin, a single Texan with two sons: Delmar and Link. They married in 1956, blended their families and had two more children: Joy and Kevin.
In 1966 the family vacationed in Alaska, never returning to The lower 48. They settled North of Kenai where Dorla’s early childhood now equipped her to live a rural life on raw land with privation and few amenities. By example her children learned work ethics and self-sufficiency at home while her husband worked the oil fields. During this time she wrote and received abundant letters; a gift to her children that let them stay connected to relatives they rarely or never met. Many happy evenings were spent reading aloud Alaskan books and playing cards.

In 1971 she began working at Nikiski Elementary as a hot lunch cashier and eventually retired as head custodian. She enjoyed caring for the school, the staff and loved the children. Her husband Red started an excavating business and Dorla operated a loader/backhoe and heavy equipment. Together they built subdivisions and roads in the K Beach, Kenai and Nikiski area that exist today.

Dorla was preceded in death by her husband Red, her son Ronnie and stepson Delmar who died while serving in Vietnam; grandson, Darrel Herrin as well as her parents, sister, Dawna Harris and brother, Kenneth Thorson.

She is survived by her children and their spouses Marcia and L.H. Pierce, Joy and Jamie Baldridge and Kevin Herrin all of Kenai, stepson Link Herrin and wife Kathy of Yorba Linda, CA, sisters Carol Hromidko, and Sharon Pratt, brothers Paul and Gary Neill and cousins Laverne and Duane, all of Bagley, Minnesota as well as grandchildren, Heather, Tiffney, Rocky, Sarah, Lucas, Ryan and Derek and 14 great grandchildren.

Condolences may be sent in care of Joy Baldridge – P.O. Box 3665 – Kenai, AK 99611.

Gedcom Download Pages

The GEDCOM download page will be changed to a password protected page so as to help control who is downloading the information. If you want to go to the page please email me from the website main page at Alaska Herrins and I will email you the username and password. The gedcoms are identical to what is used to make the site, but lack the photos. They are still privatized.

I decided to do this to help protect the work I have put into this from the Ancestry dot com scammers.

Photos….

Still battling the photo crosslink issue. I fix them all and reload the pages, and then there is a different mess to fix! Most of the photos are right, but I still have some Stone/Ogden family to fix now. I never cease to be awed by computers and what they can do and what they fail at!

I did scrounge up a few more photos and will work on integrating them later.

Site is up and running, sort of…

After much head banging the guest book is working as well as the links to download the GEDCOMs.

I have looked through the site somewhat today, now that it is all running again, and I see a lot of cross linked pictures. Photos that are not linked to the right person. I am going through all the files and trying to find them all.

After I fix the files it will take about 30 minutes to delete the old files and upload the corrected ones, for each family. There is no easy way around it. Something in the software I am using, or just dumb mistakes by me, keeps mixing up my pictures and I am a little frustrated about it right now.

So…back to the grind.

Welcome to the Alaska Herrin’s Genealogy

The website, Alaska Herrins, is finally updated as of 2009-11-01, but then I switched my server package to a Linux hosting so I could use more CGI and other scripts (or at least pretend I know how to). So it has been off line for a bit now as they switch the package over. If you are reading this, then it should be done. The site is alaskaherrins.com. I have a second site, alaskaherrins.net, but it is the out of date version and as soon as the .com site is running smoothly I will delete it.

I hope to do more frequent updates than I have been, but there are no promises. I have a lot of census images I want to add to the website and some biographical sketches that were gathered up by distant family members long ago. I need to come up with some idea of organization for all of it so it will take me a little while.

The photos linked to individuals on the genealogy pages are new for this update so there is something a little more interesting. I am always looking for more or better ones if you have something you would like to contribute. I am hoping to get some photo albums of the very old photos up soon.

If you find any errors on your family don’t hesitate to email me and I will fix it as soon as possible. I would like to know if there are broken links, misinformation or messed up pictures (ones that are obviously too small or large).
